What Is Involved With Infected Cysts?

By Amanda Clark

Cysts are common problems for many people, and can be found anywhere on the body. Abnormal sacs containing either fluid, semi-solid matter, or a combination of both, have many causes, and appear for no apparent reason. In some cases, they can turn into abscesses, or infected cysts.

Cysts can be found anywhere on the body, but are most likely to be experienced in areas where hair follicles are in a higher concentration, sexual organs, and the joints.

Whilst most cysts remain small; often not being noticed until other medical issues are being investigated, infected cysts can be quite large, unsightly and sore. Should this occur, they are most likely to be dealt with by antibiotics. In some cases, surgical procedures will be performed.

Whilst antibiotics are effective, this is only to a point, and they can often recur. For some people, such problems are a part of daily life and are closely linked with acne issues through puberty. Longer courses of antibiotics can be prescribed in such cases. However, as immunity to medication builds, other steps may be taken.

Surgical procedures to remove infected cysts are, in most cases, relatively simple inpatient procedures that last no more than half an hour. Local anesthetic is used, and the patient is entirely conscious throughout the procedure.

Whichever procedure is necessary, they are most often successful. However, in some cases complications may arise should the entire root not be removed, or a portion of the cyst is left in. As a rule too, infected cysts are usually treated, often through draining, to quell infection to make the procedure easier.

Whilst infected cysts can be incredibly painful; particularly when caught or rubbed against, there are in almost all cases benign. However, medical removal is always the best option and under no circumstances should they be squeezed with will just compound the issue. - 30428
